An artificial whisker sensor for robotics

چکیده
In this paper, we present a first series of experiments with prototype artificial whiskers that have been developed in our laboratory. These experiments have been inspired by neuroscience research on real rats. In spite of the enormous potential of whiskers, they have to date not been systematically investigated and exploited by roboticists. Although the transduction mechanism is simple and straightforward, and the whiskers are currently used in a passive way only, the dynamics of the sensory signals resulting from the interaction with various textured surfaces is complex and has a rich information content. The experiments provide the foundation for future work including active sensing, whisker arrays, and crossmodal integration.

Tactile Sensing with Whiskers of Various Shapes: Determining the Three-Dimensional Location of Object Contact Based on Mechanical Signals at the Whisker Base.
Almost all mammals use their mystacial vibrissae (whiskers) as important tactile sensors. There are no sensors along the length of a whisker: all sensing is performed by mechanoreceptors at the whisker base. To use artificial whiskers as a sensing tool in robotics, it is essential to be able to determine the three-dimensional (3D) location at which a whisker has made contact with an object. Wit...
متن کاملThe effect of whisker movement on radial distance estimation: a case study in comparative robotics
Whisker movement has been shown to be under active control in certain specialist animals such as rats and mice. Though this whisker movement is well characterized, the role and effect of this movement on subsequent sensing is poorly understood. One method for investigating this phenomena is to generate artificial whisker deflections with robotic hardware under different movement conditions. A l...
متن کاملExtracting Object Contours with the Sweep of a Robotic Whisker Using Torque Information
Several recent studies have investigated the problem of object feature extraction with artificial whiskers. Many of these studies have used an approach in which the whisker is rotated against the object through a small angle. Each small-angle “tap” of the whisker provides information about the radial distance between the base of the whisker and the object. By tapping at various points on the ob...
متن کاملA Biologically Inspired Haptic Sensor Array for use in Mobile Robotic Vehicles
The periphery of an artificial whisker sensory system is presented. It has been developed by modelling the structure and behaviour of real rodent facial vibrissae. The artificial vibrissae have been formed using composite materials and have the ability to be actively moved in a manner analogous to natural whisking. The sensory apparatus of real vibrissae has been modelled and implemented using ...
متن کاملA General Classifier of Whisker Data Using Stationary Naive Bayes: Application to BIOTACT Robots
A general problem in robotics is how to best utilize sensors to classify the robot’s environment. The BIOTACT project (BIOmimetic Technology for vibrissal Active Touch) is a collaboration between biologists and engineers that has led to many distinctive robots with artificial whisker sensing capabilities. One problem is to construct classifiers that can recognize a wide range of whisker sensati...
